Inward Travel is honoured to work with our healers. Ceremonies during this retreat are led by Doña Eugenia Casimiro, daughter of Doña Julieta Pineda Casimiro, who worked alongside María Sabina as mushroom curanderas in the mountain village of Huautla de Jiménez. Julieta was later named to the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers, and passed her altar and her way of working to her children.
Eugenia and her siblings learned directly from Julieta — inheriting her altar, her chants, and her way of working. Ceremonies today are held with the same precision, humility, and deep embodied knowledge that has been passed down through the family.
In their trusted hands, we are guided to explore our connection with consciousness and experience the insight, healing, creativity, and clarity that mushrooms so powerfully offer.
María Sabina (1894–1985) was a Mazatec healer from Oaxaca, Mexico, renowned for her sacred mushroom ceremonies. In 1957, R. Gordon Wasson's article in Life Magazine introduced the world to Mazatec mushroom ceremonies, sparking global interest in psychedelic exploration and plant medicine traditions. She was from the tiny village of Huautla de Jiménez — where this retreat takes place. — Historical context, Huautla de Jiménez
This is not a modern reinterpretation of ceremony. It is a living lineage, shared in a way that is grounded, focused, and welcoming to those approaching this medicine with sincerity and respect.
The Mazatec ceremonial tradition is not something learned in books. It is passed from parent to child, from one generation to the next, in the same mountains where it has been held for centuries. Eugenia and her siblings grew up beside their mother's altar in Huautla de Jiménez, learning the chants, the prayers, and the way of holding ceremony from Doña Julieta herself.
When Julieta passed in 2018, she left her altar and her way of working to her children. Today Eugenia leads ceremonies with the same quiet authority — a tradition that lives, breathes, and continues in the hands of the family who was born into it.
A rhythm designed with intention: arrival and grounding, then deep ceremonial work in the mountains, followed by integration before returning home.
The group meets in Mexico City and we head straight to Teotihuacán — walking the Avenue of the Dead, climbing the temples of the Sun and Moon, and setting intentions for the retreat ahead. Welcome dinner and first evening together as a group.
Private bus deep into the Sierra Mazateca. We arrive in the mountain village that has been home to the ceremonial mushroom tradition for centuries. Settle into our lodge, meet our healers, and let the pace of the mountains slow us down.
Morning yoga followed by a mushroom preparation conversation — a chance to connect as a group and hear the details of what's to come. In the evening, the first traditional Mazatec velada led by Eugenia — chants, prayers, and the sacred mushrooms of the mountains.
Sharing circle, yoga, and time to process. An excursion to María Sabina's house and gentle hiking to other sacred sites near the village — the same paths people have walked here for generations.
Morning yoga and a gentle breathwork session to open the body and deepen preparation for the evening. The second velada with Eugenia — often the deepest for many travellers, held again in the traditional Mazatec form.
A traditional temazcal (sweat lodge) ceremony to clear body and spirit. Hikes to waterfalls in the surrounding mountains and integration talks around the group. A day of the elements between the two most intense ceremonies of the week.
The final velada with Eugenia — a ceremony of gratitude and closing. What has opened during the week is honoured, integrated, and sealed. Group sharing continues into the following morning.
A relaxing day for the group. Integration conversation, time in the mountains, and a final evening in Huautla before we begin the journey home.
Return journey to Mexico City. Closing conversations and a final evening together as a group before we go our separate ways. Post-trip integration calls begin the following week.
Our November retreat overlaps with Día de los Muertos — one of Mexico's most sacred and profoundly beautiful traditions. You'll witness ofrendas, marigold paths, and the mountain village's own way of honouring the ancestors.
